Autism Queensland Cairns receives $9000 grant from SUEZ

16th November, 2016

Autism Queensland Cairns has received a $9,000 grant from waste and water management company SUEZ to improve playground facilities for local children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Autism Queensland Cairns Team Leader, Tanya Kunzler (pictured below with SUEZ North Queensland Regional Manager Rodney Born) said that the grant will allow the centre to improve safety in the outdoor playground area through installing a new turfed surface in a current trip hazard zone, and offer greater choices for play through the addition of a sand pit and shade sail.

Play is fundamental in the development of children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional skills – all areas in which children with ASD may struggle.

“By improving the safety and choices of play possibilities for the children attending the Cairns Centre we will be able to provide more opportunities for children with ASD to develop skills in the areas of cognitive and physical development, as well as sensory and social emotional skills,” said Ms Kunzler.

Presenting the cheque to Ms Kunzler on Wednesday (November 16), SUEZ North Queensland Regional Manager Rodney Born said SUEZ was pleased to support the project.

“Autism Queensland make such a positive difference to the lives of children and families impacted by ASD in the region through their early intervention and support programs,” said Mr Born.

“We are delighted to be able to assist them in delivering enhanced play opportunities that help children with ASD to build valuable life skills and participate more fully in the community.”

The SUEZ Community Grants program is now in its third year, and in the time the company has donated more than $400,000 in funding to community organisations and projects across Australia with the aim of help communities and the environment thrive.
