Studio G kcks off in Cairns this week
Studio G starts in Cairns
The high tech games, animation and interactive design program for young people with autism aged 16-24 years commences at the Cairns City Library on Tuesday, 11 July.
The program, which has enjoyed great success in Brisbane and Mackay, will run each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon during school terms and can cater for up to 20 participants can take part.
Autism Queensland’s Studio G Program Coordinator, David McCartney the program has been running in Brisbane since 2014 and Mackay since 2016 and exceeded all expectations.
“Over 125 young people with autism across Queensland have participated in the program to date, with 80 percent transitioning from the program going on to internships, employment or further education,” he said.
“Each intake has been oversubscribed with many participants remaining in the program part time to maintain connections they have made and support their ongoing transition.
“The strength of Studio G is its nurturing and supportive environment that lets young people develop social skills, self-confidence while building technical, computer and work readiness skills.
“The curriculum is self-directed and there is no certificate at the end. What we provide young people with is a social network, an opportunity to succeed and a path to employment or more training.”
Mr McCartney said the challenges of transitioning from school to training, further education or employment can be insurmountable for many young people with autism.
“Many young people with autism come to us after prolonged periods of social isolation, disengagement from work or school which can have a crippling effect on confidence,” he said.
“We know that there is a desperate need autism-specific employment and educational support, particularly in regional areas, which yield better outcomes than generic support services.
“With Studio G we support the young person for as long as they need to make their transition to adult life. They can join for one term, one year, or as long as it takes to successfully transition to their adult destination.”
