NDW Employment Program continues to grow

Autism Queensland's Neurodiversity Works program that helps businesses attract and retain a neurodivergent workforce is now available statewide.
The program is currently seeking Queensland businesses to access this funded service that will help them to become a more inclusive employer.
Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in human brains. Neurodivergent is an umbrella term that refers to people who think, learn, process information, or experience the world in different ways. Autism is one example of neurodivergence.
The NDW program offers organisations and employees working across Queensland, specialised, evidence-based training and guidance on neurodivergence in the workplace.
Through a series of workshops, attendees will gain an understanding of neurodiversity and learn tips and strategies to support creation of inclusive workplaces. Workplace communication and conflict resolution strategies to enhance collaboration are also addressed, and one session focusses on recruitment processes designed to assist employers in attracting and onboarding of a more diverse workforce.
Employment Services Manager Nina Cash said all workshops and supporting resources were customised for each business joining the program.
“Neurodiversity Works is bespoke. Each business and employee we work with benefits from individualised support that works for the business as a whole and the individuals working within it,” she said.
As well as supporting inclusivity in the workplace, Neurodiversity Works also provides direct, one-on-one support for neurodivergent employees and their managers to foster a deeper understanding of individual needs. This can include guidance on neurodiversity affirming communication and reasonable adjustments that can be made to retain employees and enable them to work at their optimum.
Nina said one of the program’s key successes was the individualised support offered to each participant.
“We work with the employee to empower them develop improved self-awareness, self-advocacy skills and an understanding of jobfit.
“We also enhance their line manager’s knowledge of the types of accommodations and communication strategies that will help build a successful working relationship.”
Autism Queensland is championing inclusivity within Queensland’s workplaces by helping employers adapt their hiring practices, and supporting Queenslanders who identify as neurodivergent have a positive employment experience.
“Our aim is to create a successful outcome for both the employee and the employer,” said Nina.
