Assessment Tools Explained

ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale - 2nd edition)

This is a semi-structured, standardised assessment, through which the administration of structured activities assesses a person's communication, social interaction, and repetitive/stereotyped behaviours. It consists of standardised activities that allow the clinician to observe behaviours that have been identified as important in diagnosing autism spectrum disorders at different developmental level and chronological ages. The activities consider verbal and non-verbal communication, joint attention and social responsiveness. One of five modules are administered depending on the person's age and expressive language ability. In terms of adequate diagnostic accuracy, the ADOS is the only standardised ASD diagnostic tool that is consistently recommended by systematic reviews of research literature as meeting these criteria (Prof A Whitehouse, et. al, 2017).
