Brisbane & South East Queensland

The following programs are available to school-aged children with a diagnosis of ASD living in South East Queensland. They are delivered by members of our multidisciplinary team including teachers & teacher aides, speech pathologists, occupational therapists and psychologists.  

Cool Conversations 

A short-term program for children aged 8 and over to help with conversation and social skills. Available during school holidays, sessions run for two hours each day for a week-long program. Two groups are available, 8-12 years and 13-16 years. Available at Autism Queensland Sunnybank Hills & Brighton.

Cool Kids

A 10-week program that teaches children and their parents how to better manage their child's anxiety. The program is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), involves the participation of children and parents and focuses on teaching practical skills. Topics covered include: Learning about anxiety; Learning to think realistically; Parenting an anxious child; Facing fears using stepladders; Learning coping skills such as assertiveness or problem-solving.

The Cool Kids program was developed by Macquarie University and has been running since 1993. The program has undergone continual scientific evaluation and development to include the latest understanding of anxiety and its treatment. It has been translated into a number of languages and today is used in clinics, schools and hospitals around the world.

This program will be delivered at Autism Queensland Sunnybank Hills commencing

  • Wednesday 17 July | 3.30pm - 4.30pm each day.

DISSCO Dance

Developing Independence, Social Success & Communication (DISSCO) is for children & adolescents aged 8-14 years. This program uses motivating mediums of dance, craft and conversation to help your child achieve their friendship goals. Led by Autism Queensland's occupational therapists, DISSCO Dance uses research-based methods to facilitate growth in a range of areas including understanding emotions, making friends, developing confidence, understanding group dynamics, using movement as a positive expression.  (Age appropriate groupings and minimum numbers will apply.) Available at Autism Queensland Sunnybank Hills & Brighton.

Fun, Friends & Feelings 

A week-long, small group program delivered during school holidays for children aged 5–7 years and their parents that focuses on using the group environment to teach and reinforce a range of social skills including coping with stress and frustration, communicating and making friends. Available during school holidays. Sessions run for 2.5 hours each day.

A six-week group program to develop the handwriting skills of Prep & Year 1 students with ASD.

LEGO® Club

A six-week, LEGO-based therapy for children aged 5-7 years. This program will assist participants to develop their social skills including communication, turn-taking, waiting, following directions and asking for help.

Make a Meal of It: Teens In the Kitchen

Make a Meal of It: Teens in the Kitchen is a week-long program for adolescents (13-17 years) that aims to prepare young people for the journey to adulthood through activities including cooking, budgeting, shopping and social participation. This program is delivered during school holidays.

A revolutionary social skills program for children aged 8-12 years with social and emotional challenges.

Studio G (Gold Coast & Mackay)

A 10-week term-based interactive workshop that supports young people on the autism spectrum aged 16-24 years  (in the transition to employment, training or further education. Individuals attend two afternoons each week during the term.

Teen Tech Shed

An after-school social group for young people on the autism spectrum between the ages of 12-15 years that encourages appropriate socialising around technology while encouraging students to extend their knowledge of programming, coding and digital media. Delivered twice-weekly at the Autism Hub, Woolloongabba.
