Brisbane & South East Queensland

The following programs are available to school-aged children with a diagnosis of ASD living in South East Queensland. They are delivered by members of our multidisciplinary team including teachers & teacher aides, speech pathologists, occupational therapists and psychologists.  

B-ME Club

Individuals on the autism spectrum aged 14-17 years are invited to join our autism specialists & mentors for four days of self-discovery and learning. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to express themselves through makeup and clothing, meet new friends and practice conversation skills, explore other areas of interest.

Cool Conversations 

A short-term program for children aged 8 and over to help with conversation and social skills. Available during school holidays, sessions run for two hours each day for a week-long program. Two groups are available, 8-12 years and 13-16 years. Available at Autism Queensland Sunnybank Hills & Brighton.

Cool Kids Anxiety Program

A 10-week program that teaches children (7-11 & 12-17 years) and their parents how to better manage their child's anxiety. The program is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), involves the participation of children and parents and focuses on teaching practical skills. Topics covered include: Learning about anxiety; Learning to think realistically; Parenting an anxious child; Facing fears using stepladders; Learning coping skills such as assertiveness or problem-solving.

The Cool Kids program was developed by Macquarie University and has been running since 1993. It has undergone continual scientific evaluation and development to include the latest understanding of anxiety and its treatment. The program has been translated into a number of languages and today is used in clinics, schools and hospitals around the world.

DISSCO Dance

Developing Independence, Social Success & Communication (DISSCO) is for children & adolescents aged 8-14 years. This program uses motivating mediums of dance, craft and conversation to help your child achieve their friendship goals. Led by Autism Queensland's occupational therapists, DISSCO Dance uses research-based methods to facilitate growth in a range of areas including understanding emotions, making friends, developing confidence, understanding group dynamics, using movement as a positive expression.  (Age appropriate groupings and minimum numbers will apply.) Available at Autism Queensland Sunnybank Hills & Brighton.

Fun, Friends & Feelings 

A week-long, small group program delivered during school holidays for children aged 5–7 years and their parents that focuses on using the group environment to teach and reinforce a range of social skills including coping with stress and frustration, communicating and making friends. Available during school holidays. Sessions run for 2.5 hours each day.

Food Scientists

A nine-week group program to help children (7-9 years) develop positive eating habits and reduce anxiety around mealtimes. The program aims to help children learn about the 'science' of food (using food for energy, learning about digestion), have positive experiences with food and learn about the properties of food, learn simple recipes they can use at home and expand the range of foods they will try.

Handwriting Group Program

A six-week group program to develop the handwriting skills of Prep & Year 1 students on the autism spectrum.

Make a Meal of It: Teens In the Kitchen

Make a Meal of It: Teens in the Kitchen is a week-long program for adolescents (13-17 years) that aims to prepare young people for the journey to adulthood through activities including cooking, budgeting, shopping and social participation. This program is delivered during school holidays.

Secret Agent Society (SAS) Social Skills Program

A revolutionary social skills program for children aged 8-12 years with social and emotional challenges. The Secret Agent Society (SAS) social skills program creates a fun, non-threatening environment in which children can learn the skills they need to become happy, well-adjusted and valued members of our society. This flexible program helps parents and professionals to improve children's emotional understanding and social skills.

Teen Tech Shed

Teen Tech Shed is a social group for young people on the autism spectrum between the ages of 12 and 15. It encourages appropriate socialising around technology while encouraging students to extend their knowledge of programming, coding and digital media.

Teen Tech Shed mentors are current students or recent graduates in Creative Industries programs that have a strong IT focus such as Game Design, Coding, Illustration, Animation and Film and Television. They work with the participants to encourage social skills and create opportunities for the students to learn more about technology.

This program is delivered at the Autism Hub, 141 Merton Rd, Woolloongabba during school terms.

Travel TRAINing for Teens

A five-day group program for teens aged 14-17 years who would like to learn more about train travel. During the program, participants will learn about journey planning, train etiquette and safety, and preparing for the unexpected.
