Allied Health & Diagnostic Assessment Services

Autism Queensland has a multidisciplinary team who are qualified to conduct a range of assessments with children, adolescents and adults for diagnostic and other purposes. These assessments are conducted by our team of psychologists, speech pathologists and occupational therapists and are currently available at our centres in Brisbane, Gladstone and Cairns. 

We have several assessment packages available. Please be aware that the type and price of the package may alter depending on the clinician’s assessment of individual need at the time of consultation. More information about the individual assessment tools can be found here ►.


Assessment Packages

Child & Adolescent Diagnostic Assessment

This package utilises a multidisciplinary team and is designed for children and adolescents who have not yet been to a paediatrician or child psychiatrist and require a comprehensive assessment to determine a diagnosis. Please note, diagnostic guidelines stipulate that a paediatrician or child psychiatrist must formalise an autism diagnosis, therefore completed reports generated by this assessment package will need to be taken to the paediatrician or child psychiatrist if seeking a formal diagnosis. This package is also suitable for individuals requiring a review of their diagnosis or a level under DSM-5.

This package includes:

  • Initial intake appointment
  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – second edition (ADOS-2)
  • Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R) OR a developmental case history
  • Social Responsiveness Scale – second edition (SRS-2)
  • Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System – third edition (ABAS-3)
  • Further investigation if required (additional costs)
  • Analysis and reporting on assessment findings.

The price for this assessment package is dependent on which assessments are identified as needed as an outcome of the initial intake appointment.

Adult Diagnostic Assessment

This package utilises a multidisciplinary team and is suitable for adults who have never received a diagnosis of ASD and require a comprehensive assessment to determine a diagnosis. Please note, diagnostic guidelines recommend that a psychiatrist should formalise an autism diagnosis, and this is a requirement if the person intends to apply to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Therefore, completed reports generated by this assessment package will need to be taken to a psychiatrist if seeking a formal diagnosis. This package is also suitable for adults who require a review of their diagnosis or a level under DSM-5.

This package includes:

  • Initial intake appointment
  • Developmental case history
  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – second edition (ADOS-2)
  • Social Responsiveness Scale – second edition (SRS-2)
  • Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System – third edition (ABAS-3)
  • Further investigation if required (additional costs)
  • Analysis and reporting of assessment findings.

ADOS-2 as requested by medical specialist*

This package is suitable for individuals whose paediatrician or psychiatrist has specifically requested for the ADOS-2 assessment to be completed to substantiate a suspected diagnosis of ASD.

It includes:

  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – second edition (ADOS-2)
  • Analysis and reporting.

Multidisciplinary Assessment (General)*

This package utilises a multidisciplinary team and is suitable for individuals requiring a comprehensive functional assessment to inform therapy and support service access and/or to facilitate NDIS application or review. This package is suitable for those presenting with complex behavioural concerns and for those whose impairments may have a subtle presentation.

This package may consist of:

  • Initial intake appointment
  • Psychology assessment. Eg Mental health assessment; Initial behaviour observation
  • Occupational therapy assessment. Eg Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System – third edition (ABAS-3); Sensory Assessment; Task analysis
  • Communication Assessment. Eg Standardised language assessment; Structured observation; Dynamic Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) trial
  • Analysis and reporting.

The price for this assessment package is dependent on which assessments are identified as needed as an outcome of the initial intake appointment.

*Therapist can travel to and from home and/or community (additional costs apply).


Positive Behaviour Support

This package is suitable for individuals requiring a positive behaviour support plan (PBSP). It is recommended for individuals with identified behaviours of concern and who are in the process of applying or reviewing their current proactive and reactive strategies including approved restrictive practices.

Following is a breakdown of a basic package* to develop or review a PBSP conducted by an allied health professional:

  • Initial intake and case history
  • Direct observation
  • Risk assessment
  • Quality of life assessment
  • Behaviour data recording
  • Functional behaviour assessment
  • Analysis and reporting
  • Plan development or review (includes formulation of clinical hypotheses, proactive and reactive strategies and recommendations based on assessments conducted)
  • One initial training session to assist with plan implementation
  • Therapist travel (additional costs).

Total costings will be calculated based on a minimum of 36 hours to complete a basic plan* 
* Multidisciplinary assessments are not included in the basic PBS package but are highly recommended during this process to more comprehensively inform recommendations and/or meet plan conditions stipulated by the relevant decision-maker. PBS service should be tailored to suit individual needs and further training, implementation, monitoring and reviews are strongly recommended (additional costs).


Multidisciplinary Assessment (for Supported Independent Living application or review)

This package is suitable for individuals who are applying for or reviewing their Supported Independent Living (SIL) arrangements. It is recommended for those individuals who are seeking suitable accommodation and requiring a functional assessment to ascertain their level of independence in daily living and support needs required.

This comprehensive package may consist of the following:

  • Initial intake appointment
  • Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System – third edition (ABAS-3)
  • Daily living task analysis (multiple settings)
  • Other functional needs assessment, depending on the individual’s needs identified. Eg Case history – mental health, medical, social and emotional needs; Behaviour observation if any behaviour/s of concern identified; Communication assessment; Mobility related assessment; Sensory assessment
  • Analysis and reporting.

Approx $1,776.55 (based on minimum input from two disciplines).
* Therapist can travel to and from home and/or community (additional costs apply).

All assessments will include an initial intake appointment to ascertain the most appropriate assessment tool/s to gain the results required.

The price of a single or personalised assessment package is calculated on the hourly rate/s of the allied health professional staff involved.
From $193.99 per hour (speech pathologist / occupational therapist) or $214.41 per hour (psychologist or PBS).
