ABOUT

In this two-part webinar we will identify some of the barriers faced by autistic women, while also celebrating and empowering participants to embark on a journey of self-discovery.

Our aim is for participants to gain valuable insights and deepen their understanding of their diagnosis, but will also celebrate and empower them, support their journey to self-discovery, and help provide insight and understanding into their authentic selves.

Many autistic women experience misunderstanding and judgement, whether they self-identify as autistic or have a formal diagnosis. The traditional male presentation of autism can make it difficult for clinicians and other professionals to recognise autism in women and fully appreciate their experiences.

While many autistic women are adept at masking and camouflaging, this can significantly impact mental health and contribute to autistic burnout. For many, a diagnosis or self-identification is a pivotal step in unmasking and will support them on their journey toward embracing their true selves.

The content of these sessions has been developed with input from autistic women, their families and professionals who work closely with autistic women.

Topics to be discussed will include:

  • Gender diversity (this will be a brief discussion only)
  • Key characteristics common to autistic women
  • The impact of masking on mental health
  • When to seek professional support for mental health concerns
  • What is autistic burnout and potential solutions?
  • Staying safe online.
  • Sharing your diagnosis with family, friends and professionals
  • Dating and relationships
  • Autistic women and eating behaviours
  • Empowering women to self-advocate to family, partners, clinicians, educators and medical professionals.
  • Journey to your authentic self.

OUR SESSIONS:
  • Are practical and easy to understand.
  • Have limited numbers to allow for participant interaction and engagement.
  • Allow you to ask questions and develop strategies to help you and your family.
  • Are drawn from current and evidence-informed practice.
