SERIES DATES: Tuesday 12 & 26 February; 12 & 26 March.
This suite of four workshops will provide participants with information and strategies to best support students on the autism spectrum in the Prep setting. Participants will gain a greater understanding of autism and how it impacts an individual in their first year of school.
Strategies presented will be relevant to an inclusive Prep setting and suitable for implementation by a busy Prep teacher and their support staff. This series has been designed in the knowledge that participants will attend all four workshops, as the topics build upon knowledge learnt within each session.
WORKSHOP 1 Person-centred
Characteristics of autism and knowing your student
Partnering with parents during the Prep journey
General strategies suitable for the Prep classroom
WORKSHOP 2 Learning
Learning preferences and incorporating students' strengths
Creating successful routines and classroom structure
Considering the classroom environment.
WORKSHOP 3 Access to the Australian Curriculum
Promoting oral language skills and early literacy
Teaching phonological awareness
Reading and writing: Where do we start?
WORKSHOP 4 Navigating the Social/emotional World of Prep
Supporting emotion regulation
Fostering skills for social learning
Participants will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with other Prep teachers and support staff and will leave the suite of workshops with a bank of practical strategies and usable resources.
