BRISBANE - Setting up the Social Environment through Peer Support

Autism Queensland, 437 Hellawell Road, SUNNYBANK HILLS - 15:30 - 17:30

Many students diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder experience bullying or social isolation in their mainstream school, and schools are faced with increasing pressure to address the social needs of these students.

The Australian Educational Needs Analysis (2018) also found the ‘social demands’ of school were one of the most difficult areas faced by young people on the spectrum.

Peer support programs can offer potential benefits for both the young person on the autism spectrum and their neurotypical peers.

In this session, the facilitator will discuss the use of peer support strategies to help young people on the autism spectrum and provide examples and case studies to highlight challenges and strategies that may be useful for the individual.

Questions and sharing of information/ideas are encouraged and highly desirable to enhance learning outcomes for all.

This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in learning more about autism and peer support to assist individuals on the autism spectrum.

Suitable for Queensland teacher CPD Annual Requirements, Australian Professional Standards for Teaching 1.

Our workshops are:

  • Practical and easy to understand
  • Interactive
  • Drawn from current and evidence-informed practice.
