Adolescent/Adult Goal Setting Tool (AAGST)

The Adolescent/Adult Goal Setting Tool (AAGST) is a person-centred planning resource developed by Autism Queensland (AQ) to help autistic people identify, prioritise, and communicate their goals and take lead in shaping their own lives.
The award-winning AAGST is a person-centred planning resource developed in collaboration with researchers and autistic people, to help autistic and other neurodivergent adolescents and adults actively engage in planning and goal setting. Using illustrated and categorised cards, the tool helps autistic people explore what matters to them, identify their goals, and communicate what they want to work towards.
Whether it’s building independence, finding employment, developing relationships, or becoming more involved in the community, the AAGST puts the person’s own priorities at the centre of the conversation. It gives families and professionals a practical way to move beyond assumptions about what someone needs and focus on what they actually want, supporting more meaningful, personalised goals and greater autonomy.
The tool is designed for use across a variety of settings to support autistic and neurodivergent adolescents and adults identify and work towards their goals. It can be used by therapists and other allied health professionals, educators, families/carers, support coordinators, disability support workers, employment consultants, other service providers, or individuals themselves.
In 2018, the Cooperative Research Centre for Living with Autism (Autism CRC) funded an evaluation of the AAGST. The project received the 2018 Autism CRC Award for Achievement in Autism Spectrum Research, recognising outstanding commitment to inclusive research practices.
Co-designed with autistic people, for autistic people
The AAGST is not a standardised test, but a flexible, person-centred card-sorting tool co-designed by autistic people, for autistic people, with lived experience at the heart of its development. Its goals, illustrations, and resources were shaped by input from autistic people and their families through surveys, interviews, and focus groups, alongside contributions from autistic illustrators and members of the Australia and New Zealand Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN).
The tool builds on the legacy Family Goal Setting Tool (FGST), combining existing research and person-centred planning approaches with evidence-informed practices and feedback from teachers, allied health professionals and researchers. Trials with autistic people, alongside interviews with autistic people and their families, helped refine the cards to ensure the goals were clear, relevant and comprehensive. The result is a flexible tool grounded in autistic perspectives, designed to support meaningful goal setting that reflects each person’s individual priorities, preferences and aspirations.
Why professionals choose the AAGST?
- Inclusive & accessible: Supports a wide range of communication, language, and cognitive styles and strengths. It combines simple language, visual supports, and flexible sorting. The tool is grounded by lived experience and supported by evidence-informed practice.
- Visual & engaging: The illustrated goal cards were created by an autistic artist. Each card pairs illustration with simple wording to describe goals, coded into nine categories.
- Person-centred & flexible: Whilst providing structure, the tool is adaptable across a variety of demographics and service settings (therapy, education, employment). The sorting process allows for autonomy and self-advocacy, allowing room for additional ideas to be captured outside of the base set of cards.
The AAGST is ideal for use in:
- NDIS planning and reviews
- School and tertiary education transition supports
- Allied health, disability, mental health, and wellbeing services
- Supported living and other lifestyle support settings
- Employment, training programs, peer mentoring, and advocacy programs
- Self-directed planning families or other professionals.
The AAGST includes 75 illustrated goal cards, categorised across nine areas of life, helping explore interests, identify what matters most, and communicate personal goals. To help guide the process, the kit includes sorting plates, a goal explanation cards, a detailed user manual and quick-start guide to support therapists and facilitators, and a resource booklet with practical tips, suggested scripts, and reproducible templates for recording and planning priority goals.
The nine (9) illustrated goal card categories include:
- Social relationships
- Self-care & home living
- Study & training
- Employment
- Health & fitness
- Community access & participation
- Communication
- Finances
- Emotional wellbeing
