Positive Behaviour Guidance (PBG)

Autism Queensland is proud to deliver the PBG service as part of the Queensland Government’s Early Childhood Guidance Program. This fully-funded initiative supports early childhood educators and teachers to build skills, knowledge, and confidence in using positive behaviour strategies in their educational settings.

What is PBG?

PBG is a proactive approach educators can draw upon to support and positively guide children’s behaviour. It is the most positive and effective way educators can support children towards developing the skills and understanding they need to interact positively with others. PBG is not a reactive approach used only when children are engaging in unsafe behaviours, it is a whole-setting and all-day approach that occurs through educator-to child connection, interactions and communication.

Every child has the right to feel safe, respected, valued and listened to. Educators must develop respectful and positive relationships with children in order to help them develop the skills and understandings they need to interact positively with their peers and others.

What is available as part of AQ’s PBG service?

Educators and teachers working in these settings can now access FREE, on-demand, and accessible supports, resources, and workshops—plus a dedicated educator phoneline for personalised guidance (Monday to Friday, 8:30am-3:30pm, excl. public holidays).

Our consultants will collaborate with you to:

  • Create respectful, positive relationships that support children to develop self-reliance and self-esteem.
  • Uphold each child’s dignity and rights, helping them feel safe to share their opinions and express themselves.
  • Use positive encouragement to foster confidence and meaningful interactions.
  • Respect family and cultural values, as well as each child’s age, development, and abilities, to support inclusive and empowering relationships.

Workshops & webinars

Our PBG workshops are scheduled across the year and delivered face-to-face or online. These workshops are a collaborative, professional learning opportunity.

Foundational Learning Workshop:

Through a 6-hour workshop, educators will build knowledge and confidence in the foundational principles of PBG. This includes exploring the theory behind the approach, and learning evidence-based practices that can be implemented in all early childhood settings. This session explores PBG through three core topics:

  • Regulation: Explore the neuroscience behind regulation to better understand and identify stress responses in children and how this contributes to behaviour. Educators will also discover why working together as a regulated team is so important to achieve co-regulation for children and the it plays in development. This includes practical strategies for regulation in early childhood settings.
  • Understanding Behaviour: Unpack the potential unmet needs that drive and influence a child’s behaviour while developing a deeper understanding of behaviour and the influences under a child’s iceberg. Educators will take away practical tips for supporting these unmet needs through inclusive practices.
  • Positive Relationships: Recognise the power and benefit of positive and respectful relationships with all children. Explore how connection guides behaviour and responsiveness and leave with practical strategies for developing connection, building relationships, and positively interacting with all children.

Tools for Strengthening Supports:

Through a 4-hour workshop, educators will explore how they can continue to strengthening supports for individual or groups of children through more targeted strategies. This interactive session builds upon foundational learning to explore new tools for planning consistent and safe responses to children’s behaviours of concern.

Please note: It is highly recommended that educators participating in this workshop first complete the foundational workshop.

PBG for Leaders:

This 2-hour session explores how leaders can best support educators in implementing PBG practices to create positive, inclusive, and responsive learning environments for all children. It focuses on practical ways to embed PBG across the service, encouraging reflection on each setting’s specific needs and context. Leaders will explore strategies for supporting consistent implementation, building staff capability, and maintaining alignment between everyday practices and the PBG framework.
