The Family Goal Setting Tool (FGST)
For therapists, teachers, social workers and other specialists working with families with young children, the FGST is a card sort to scaffold the identification, communication and prioritisation of each families goals. It encompasses child-focused goals and the family need for information, support and the opportunity for active participation in the community.
There are two versions of the Family Goal Setting Tool available: The FGST (for families with children with disabilities) and the FGST (ASD Version).

The FGST (Disability Version) consists of a pack of 80 illustrated goal cards divided into nine categories:
- Communication
- Social Participation
- Emotional Regulation
- Play and Learning
- Self-care
- Motor Skills
- Community Access & Participation
- Information
- Support.
FGST: ASD Version
FGST: ASD Version
The FGST (ASD Version) consists of a pack of 68 illustrated goal cards divided into eight categories including:
- Communication
- Social Participation
- Emotional Regulation
- Play and Learning
- Self-care
- Community Access & Participation
- Information
- Support.
Both versions of the FGST contain the goal cards, three sorting base plates, a Something Else Card, User Manual, Check Sheet and master copies of a Goal Record Sheet and My Priority Goals form designed to be copied.
Both tools are suitable for use by therapists, teachers, social workers and other specialists working in inter/transdisciplinary teams. It is also suitable for sole practitioners and planners/case managers who wish to have a holistic understanding of the child and family’s needs and priorities.
The FGST was developed within Autism Queensland and piloted in six of its early intervention teams.
