More Support for Young Children and Families as PlayConnect+ Secures Federal Funding Extension

Autism Queensland (AQ) is thrilled to share that PlayConnect+, a vital program supporting young children and their families, has received a funding extension from the Australian Government until mid-2027.

The extension of the program, delivered through the National Early Childhood Program (NECP) to support young children with disability or developmental concerns, their families and carers was announced by Minister for Social Services Amande Rishworth on 2 February 2025.

PlayConnect+ provides facilitated support through playgroups and music programs to young children (aged 0-8 years) with disability or developmental concerns. Face-to-face sessions are offered in all states and territories during school terms, with additional online and face-to-face activities offered during school terms.

Autism Queensland leads the program consortium that includes playgroup associations who deliver the PlayConnect+ groups across Australia and state autism associations.

PlayConnect+ playgroups are rich, supportive environments where children can learn, socialise and develop important skills with peers through fun, play-based activities. Families are supported to build resilience and confidence, enabling them to thrive.

Sessions are tailored to meet the unique needs of each community and include weekly supported playgroups, music groups, holiday groups and online groups. Additionally, PlayConnect+ serves as a gateway to a broader network of support, connecting families to therapy, education, NDIS and much more.

Since commencing in mid-2022, PlayConnect+ has made a life-changing difference for families across Australia: more than 1670 families and 2100 children have participated in almost 4000 PlayConnect+ sessions, including more than 250 First Nations children and parents/caregivers; 164 culturally/linguistically diverse families; and 104 families with a family member also experiencing a disability/illness.

Autism Queensland CEO Frances Scodellaro welcomed the funding extension for PlayConnect+, and fellow NECP’s project, ACU’s facilitated group workshops for parents and carers whose children have a newly identified disability or who have concerns regarding their child’s development.

“PlayConnect+ has been a lifeline for so many families. This extension ensures that more children can access inclusive, supportive playgroups that foster connection, learning, and social development. Autism Queensland is proud to continue leading this vital initiative.”
